There are sixteen musical groups at Grace UMC!  Music is an integral part of congregational life at Grace, and people from four-year-old children on up to our senior adults participate in offering music for the glory of God.  Please contact the church office or the group’s director to find out more about getting involved in music ministry here.

 

Singing Choirs

The Chancel Choir is the main adult vocal ensemble of Grace Church and sings for the 11:00 am service on 1st, 4th and 5th Sundays, and the 8:30 am service on 2nd Sundays. This choir also participates in special services, such asChancelWesleyConcert-smallChancel Choir and Wesley Singers in Concert Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday and Holy Week, and also sings at least one larger work each year. Music reading experience is not required to join the choir. Rehearsal is held on Wednesdays, 7:30-9:15 pm in the Choir Room. Directed by Milton Rodgers.

 

The Treble Ensemble is for adult female singers who read music and who want a smaller group experience. The Treble Ensemble sings at both the 8:30 am and 11:00 am services on the 3rd Sundays and often participates in holiday services. Rehearsal is held on Sundays, 6:30-7:45 pm in the Choir Room. Directed by Lynn Jost.


The Grace Notes choir is devoted to a cappella choral music.  This choir is an intimate ensemble of singers with music reading and choral experience. Open to young adults and adults.
The mixed voice choir sings on the 1st Sunday of the month at the 8:30 am or 11 am service on a rotating basis.  Rehearsal is held on Mondays, 7:30-8:15 pm in the choir room. Directed by Lynn Jost.


The Wesley Singers is Grace UMC’s youth vocal choir for students in Grades 6-12. The choir typically sings for the 11:00 am service on 2nd Sundays, and for the 8:30 service on the 4th Sundays. No music reading experience is required to join this fun group with around 50 singers each year. This choir participates in special services such as Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday, and also performs one concert each year. The Wesley Singers take their music ministry "on the road" each summer with a summer tour that combines concert performances and outreach mission support to the tour city community. Praise Bands

SonRise is Grace's contemporary adult Christian music ensemble for both singers and instrumentalists. SonRise performs a variety of gospel, contemporary Christian and original songs.  They rehearse on Sundays from 3:00-5:00 pm in the sanctuary, and play each week for the 5:00 pm contemporary service.  If you are interested in SonRise, or if you would like more information, please contact Jason Wilsher.

GotHymn-smallGotHymn? is Grace's contemporary youth Christian music ensemble for both singers and instrumentalists. This group of middle and high school students leads Youth Worship and plays at events and worship around the church and beyond. Practices are on 2nd and 4th Sundays, 12-2:00 pm Led by Morgan Combs. Ringing Choirs

ParrishBellsNoRobes-smallThe Parrish Bells are the advanced handbell choir at Grace. Music reading is a prerequisite. This seven-octave bell choir typically rings at the 8:30am and 11:00am services on 3rd Sundays and also participates in some special services such as Christmas Eve and Easter. They participate in handbell festivals, have toured in Germany three times, and were one of the founding choirs of the Northern Virginia Handbell Festival. Rehearsals are on Sundays, 7:45-9:15 pm. Directed by Milton Rodgers.
 
 
 “The Music of the Spheres” is an arrangement by Kevin McChesney for Hand Bells with Piano and Brass. The piece includes music from “This Is My Father’s World”, “Hail to the Lord’s Anointed”, and “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.” It is here played by the Grace United Methodist Church Parrish Bells on April 24, 2016 with Sarah Scott at Piano, Shaun Hydock and Craig Loe on trumpets (both members of the Grace UMC Brass Ensemble), and directed by Rev. Milton Rodgers.

The Grace GosBells are the intermediate/beginner handbell choir. Music reading is helpful but not a prerequisite. This choir usually rings at the 8:30 am and 11:00 am services on 4th Sundays. They often participate in the Area III Adult Handbell Festival in Ocean City, MD. They welcome participants of all ages, including youth in grades 6-12. Rehearsals are Mondays, 7:30-9:00 pm. The Chimers are a mission-oriented chime choir that visits various older adult facilites on Mondays during the school year to lead a time of singing with the residents. No music reading experience is required. The group meets on Mondays, 10:30 -11:00 am. Led by Milton Rodgers.


Instrumental Ensembles

 

Brass-Ensemble-05-300xThe Grace Brass Ensemble is open to any brass player 7th grade through adult.  They play approximately once a quarter for the morning worship services and for other festive worship services (Easter, Christmas).  Rehearsals are held Thursdays, 7:30-8:30 pm Directed by Allan Anderson.  For more information, please contact Milton Rodgers or look at the Grace Brass Ensemble web site.  Also, you can see their Facebook page and their Twitter page.




On Youth Sunday, April 17, 2016, our newest UMC Grace Brass Ensemble member, Josef Arnold, played "Benedictus" for Euphonium & Piano from "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace" (Karl Jenkins, arr. Brian Bindner) for the Prelude at the 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM services.

The Grace Woodwind Ensemble is open to any woodwind player.  They play occasionally for morning worship services and for other special worship services.  Rehearsals are held  as needed on Sundays from 12:15-1:15 pm.   Directed by Mary Jane Benjamin.  For more information, please contact Milton Rodgers.


Children's Choirs

Joyful Singers is a singing choir for children ages 4 - Kindergarten. This choir sings at the 11:00 am service on the third Sunday of the month during the school year. They rehearse on Mondays from 5:15-6:00 pm, with rehearsal beginning in the Sanctuary for group gathering time with the elementary choirs, then moves down to the Fellowship Hall. Asbury Choir Jan2016Asbury Winter MusicalOur Asbury Singing and Ringing Choirs are for children in 1st-5th grades.  Asburys begin their weekly Monday rehearsals at 5:15 pm with a group gathering time in the Sanctuary, and then split into age levels to spend a half hour in singing rehearsal and a half hour in ringing rehearsal, with Asbury rehearsal concluding at 6:30 pm.   • The Asbury Choir is for students in Grades 3-5 and rehearses in the Choir Room from 5:30-6:00 pm with Milton Rodgers and Lynn Jost. The choir sings at varying worship services, with the schedule determined each fall. They participate in the Choristers' Guild festival every other year and join with the Asbury Singers to present a spring musical during worship services.
  • The Asbury Singers is for students in Grades 1-2 and rehearses in the Choir Room from 6:00-6:30 pm with Milton Rodgers and Lynn Jost. The choir sings at varying worship services, with the schedule determined each fall. They join with the Asbury Choir to present a spring musical during worship services.
  • The Asbury Ringers choir is open to students in Grades 3-5 and rings about once every other month in worship. Students learn the basics of ringing and are led by experienced youth and young adult ringers from 6:00-6:30 pm in the Sanctuary.
  • The Asbury Chimers choir is open to students in Grades 1-2 and rings about once every other month in worship. Students learn the basics of ringing and are led by experienced youth and young adult ringers from 5:30-6:00 pm in the Sanctuary.
